Subject: DISPENSING SECTION

A. Policy

The OR Satellite Pharmacy, Central Pharmacy, and Cancer Institute Satellite comprise the inpatient dispensing section of the hospital pharmacy. The Central Pharmacy, located in Ward Tower, Room G1010, is responsible for the support to all nursing units.  The Oncology satellite pharmacy located on the first floor of the Cancer Institute, and the Outpatient Pharmacy located on the first floor of the Outpatient Center comprise the outpatient dispensing section.

B. Responsibilities of each division

1. Central Pharmacy

a.  Edit and process all physician orders

b.  Provide prescription drug dosage forms of all types

c.   Manage controlled substances

d.  Prepare all I.V. admixtures

e.  Control non-charge floorstock for nursing units

f.    Provide pharmaceutical supplies to ancillary areas

g.  Specialty compounding for patient care or research

2. OR Satellite Pharmacy

a.  Provides 13 hours of service Monday through Thursday and 10 hours of service on Friday

b.  Serves operating suites, anesthesia, One Day Surgery, and PACU

c.  Maintain controlled drugs       

d.  Prepare all drugs including I.V. admixtures needed by areas

3. Outpatient Pharmacy

a.  Provide retail prescription services; Hours of operation 8:30 am to 6:00 pm

b.  Provide limited service on weekends and holidays to hospital discharge patients

c.  Serve outpatient clinic patients, hospital discharge patients and UAMS employees

d.  Supply floor stock to outpatient clinics

4. Cancer Institute Satellite

  1. Provide 12 hours of service 7 days a week
  2. Prepare limited amount of take-home medications for Cancer Institute patients
  3. Prepare IV admixtures, particularly chemotherapy for patients who have been seen in Cancer Institute clinic
