Subject:    MORNING ADMIT (A.M.) SURGERY

 

A.  POLICY

Some patients are scheduled for surgery as outpatients and then are admitted to the hospital after their surgery.  The medication needs of these patients will be supplied by the hospital pharmacy.

B.  PROCEDURE

1.  Orders for antibiotics and/or special medications for A.M. surgery patients will be dispensed from the OR Satellite Pharmacy or from the automated dispensing machine (ADM).  Drugs related to routine patient preparation for surgery are dispensed and charged through the OR satellite or from ADM.

2.  For medications dispensed from the OR satellite, the physician order is phoned to the OR satellite.

3.  The OR pharmacist will check the orders dispensed from the OR satellite for allergies through the nursing staff of pre-op holding.

4.  The OR satellite will deliver medications to pre-op holding via pneumatic tube or the pre-op staff will pick up medications from the OR satellite.

5.  All medications dispensed from the OR satellite will be charged via specialty charge function in the computer.
