Subject:    EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT DRUG SUPPLY

POLICY

Drugs and pharmaceuticals stocked in the Emergency Department are limited by mutual agreement between the staff of the Emergency Department and the hospital pharmacy and are approved by the Pharmacy Committee. Controlled substances are stocked according to the preference of staff physicians but the variety and quantities are limited for security reasons.

B. TYPES OF DRUG STOCK

The drugs stocked are in several categories and are listed below. Additions and deletions to this list require approval from the Director of Pharmacy.

1. Patient charge items are stocked in the PYXIS Automated

Dispensing System.

2. The ED Floorstock medication for non-charge items.

3. I.V. Solutions and sets.

4. The "Eye Tray" for use on ophthamology patients.

C. RESTOCKING OF EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT DRUGS AND SUPPLIES

1. I.V. fluids are processed through Central Supply on a "par level" procedure. Standard fluids are charged in the OmniCell. Fluids containing drugs are stocked by pharmacy in the PYXIS or sent individually by patient.

2. All patient charge items are replaced by normal refill functions on the PYXIS. These drugs are charged to the patient by direct patient name entry into the PYXIS by the nursing personnel and automatic transfer to billing.

3. When the eye tray is used for a patient the entire tray is returned to pharmacy with a stamped charge ticket. The tray is checked, replaced, charged and sealed. It is then returned to the Emergency Department for reuse.

4. Floorstock is handled as with other nursing units in policy 5:25.
