Subject: EXPIRATION DATING OF MANUFACTURED PRODUCTS

POLICY

All drugs which are removed form the manufacturer’s original container and are repackaged for hospital distribution will be assigned a new expiration date by the pharmacy. To provide greater drug stability, all drug items packaged by the UAMS pharmacy will be packaged in Class A or Class B standard packaging and all drugs repackaged in bulk will be packaged in amber glass containers.

Expiration Date Guidelines
  1. All products will receive an expiration date of 12 months from the date of  packaging or  the remaining time on the manufacturer’s expiration date, whichever is less.
  1. Drugs with well known stability problems such as nitroglycerin, oral digoxin, cyclophosphamide or chlorambucil will be purchased in manufacturer’s unit dose packaging when available. If it is necessary to package these items, a visual inspection of the product will be made within 3 months of packaging to insure the physical integrity of the product.
