Intravenous Sedatives and Narcot

Intravenous Sedatives and Narcotics for

Diagnostic and Therapeutic Procedures

Guidelines for Use

Each unit or department using intravenous sedatives and narcotics for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures must establish a procedure and also establish quality assurance monitoring of that procedure. The following functions are required to be a part of the protocol. The starred procedures must be documented in the patient record.

*1. The respiratory, cardiac and mental status of the patient must be assessed before the procedure.

*2. Benefits and risks of the procedure must be explained.

*3. Intravenous infusion is started and maintained during the procedure.

4. Oxygen and a crash cart must be available in the area.

5. Intravenous narcotics and sedatives are to be administered only by personnel with privileges to do so.

6. Midazolam is to be used by guidelines recommended by the manufacturer -Roche- because it is fairly new and sometimes unpredictable.

*7. Blood pressure, pulse, and respiration are monitored. Pulse oximetry and ECG are optional.

*8. Patient’s vital signs are monitored following the procedure for an appropriate time period, depending on the nature of the procedure.

*9. Written instructions are to be given to patients when they are discharged to go home.

The chart should also reflect the drugs and dosage given, the procedure performed, and the designated adult responsible for the patient if the patient is sent home.
