AMPICILLIN-SULBACTAM

Guidelines for Use

It is appropriate to use Ampicillin-Sulbactam for the following conditions.

  1. As a single agent for empiric therapy of community acquired intra-abdominal infections, and gynecological infections.
  2. Culture and sensitivity proves isolated organism is resistant to penicillin or ampicillin and is sensitive to ampicillin-sulbactam combination.
  3. For treatment of a mild to moderate infection with more than one type of organism suspected or cultured which would otherwise require combination therapy or a more expensive antimicrobial agent, such as diabetic foot ulcer or cellulitis.

Ampicillin-Sulbactam is not indicated or approved for use at the University Hospital for the following.

  1. Prophylaxis of any kind.
  2. Patients with hypersensitivity to penicillins.
  3. As a single agent for the treatment of serious or life-threatening infections.
  4. For the treatment of an infection caused by methicillin-resistant Staph aureus.

Dose:

1.5-3.0 grams IV every 6 hours. Adjustment required for renally impaired patients.

Monitor:

Adverse Reaction - diarrhea, vomiting, rash (especially with allopurinol), headache, superinfections, increased liver or kidney function tests.
