SECOND GENERATION CEPHALOSPORINS
Cefoxitin
Guidelines for Use
Indications for Use:
Infection with culture-proved organism
Empirical use in presumptive infection commonly caused
by susceptible organisms normally requiring combination therapy.
Intra-abdominal sepsis
Endometritis
Pelvic inflammatory disease
Infections of lower respiratory tract
Other likely infections particularly involving
Bacteroides
Prophylaxis in surgery for:
-
Elective colon surgery
Penetrating abdominal trauma
Cesarean-section (24 hours limit)
Vaginal hysterectomy
Dose:
1 - 2 grams every six hours with a maximum of 12 grams
daily. Conform to MIC if cultured.
Monitor:
Possible development of third generation cephalosporin
resistance in
