SECOND GENERATION CEPHALOSPORINS

Cefoxitin

Guidelines for Use

Indications for Use:

  1. Infection with culture-proved organism

  2. Empirical use in presumptive infection commonly caused by susceptible organisms normally requiring combination therapy.

    1. Intra-abdominal sepsis

    2. Endometritis

    3. Pelvic inflammatory disease

    4. Infections of lower respiratory tract

    5. Other likely infections particularly involving Bacteroides

  3. Prophylaxis in surgery for:

    1. Elective colon surgery

    2. Penetrating abdominal trauma

    3. Cesarean-section (24 hours limit)

    4. Vaginal hysterectomy

Dose:

1 - 2 grams every six hours with a maximum of 12 grams daily. Conform to MIC if cultured.

Monitor:

Possible development of third generation cephalosporin resistance in
