Background
Program Purpose
PGY1 residency programs build upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives. Residents who successfully complete PGY1 residency programs will be skilled in diverse patient care, practice management, leadership, and education, and be prepared to provide patient care, seek board certification in pharmacotherapy (i.e., BCPS), and pursue advanced education and training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies.
Program Description
The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program at Arkansas Children’s Hospital (ACH) in collaboration with the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) College of Pharmacy provides a structured educational training program in a pediatric environment, including participation in a Postgraduate Research Certificate Program and Teaching Certificate Program. Graduates will be prepared to practice as well-rounded pediatric clinical pharmacists, for clinical faculty positions, or for PGY2 pediatric residency programs.
Arkansas Children’s Hospital
Arkansas Children’s Hospital is a pediatric hospital with a Level I trauma center in Little Rock, Arkansas. It is among the largest in the United States, serving children from birth to age 21.

The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency conducted by Arkansas Children’s Hospital and the UAMS College of Pharmacy in Little Rock, Arkansas, is accredited by ASHP.

Each 4 weeks’ duration
- Pharmacy Orientation
- Cardiovascular ICU
- Pediatric ICU
- Neonatal ICU
- General Pediatrics
- Ambulatory Care: choice of practice site: Bone Marrow Transplant, Heart Transplant, Kidney Transplant, or Cardiology
Longitudinal Experiences (7)
Each 12 months’ duration unless otherwise specified
- Hematology/Oncology Clinic (3 to 6 months)
- Pharmacy Administration and Drug Use Policy
- Pharmacy Staffing
- Research (Postgraduate Research Certificate Program)
- Teaching Certificate Program
- Antimicrobial Stewardship
Elective Rotations
Each 4 weeks’ duration, must choose 5:
- Cardiovascular ICU II
- Pediatric ICU II
- Neonatal ICU II
- Emergency Medicine
- Infectious Diseases
- Ambulatory Care II, select from sites above
Elective Longitudinal Experiences
- Antimicrobial Stewardship/Quality Improvement (3-12 months)
- Pharmacogenomics (3-12 months)
Additional Responsibilities/Projects Throughout the Year
- Complete the UAMS College of Pharmacy Residency Research Certificate
- Design, conduct, and present a research project
- Complete the UAMS College of Pharmacy Teaching Certificate Program
- Precept one to two months of APPE pharmacy students
- Teach Therapeutics Recitation and Pediatrics Electives (Problem Based Learning and/or Pediatric Clinical Skills)
- Complete a medication use evaluation (MUE)
- Pharmacy staffing one weekend per month, two evenings per month, and 2 holidays
