Background
The PGY2 Geriatric Pharmacy Residency through the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) College of Pharmacy provides the resident with diverse learning opportunities in the field of geriatric pharmacotherapy and academia. The resident gains experience in a variety of settings afforded by the UAMS Donald W. Reynolds Institute on Aging, including ambulatory care in the Thomas and Lyon Longevity Clinic, acute care on the Geriatric Consult Team, and long term care at nursing homes affiliated with the Institute on Aging. The resident will precept pharmacy students, teach in a variety of courses throughout the pharmacy curriculum, and have ample opportunities to teach other health care professionals. Upon successful completion of the program, residents are awarded a Residency Certificate.
The purpose of the PGY2 geriatric pharmacy residency program is to build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency programs to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists in geriatric pharmacy practice. It provides residents with opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and incorporating both into the provision of patient care or other advanced practice settings. Residents who successfully complete this PGY2 geriatric pharmacy residency are prepared for advanced patient care, academic, or other specialized positions, along with board certification in geriatrics
