The Experimental Cytogenetics Core maintains and operates equipment to analyze numerical and structural chromosomal abnormalities for research purposes. The core offers a variety of conventional as well as cutting edge molecular cytogenetic services including, analysis of chromosomal aberrations by solid staining or G-banding, locus specific fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) including probes for human telomeres, whole chromosome paint (WCP) for individual chromosomes, and spectral karyotyping (SKY) in cells from human and research animal sources. Cytogenetic studies are performed on fresh cells or tissues including peripheral blood, bone marrow, skin, and solid tumors.
Core Services
- Tissue culture
- Karyotype characterization of new cell lines
- Confirmation of cell line identity or stability
- Chromosome copy number enumeration
- Locus- or chromosome-specific FISH hybridization of metaphase chromosomes
- Telomere hybridization of metaphase chromosomes
- Assistance in design and development of cytogenetic assays
- Spectral karyotyping
- Publication-quality illustrations (https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-019-47002-0)
Equipment and Facilities
The Experimental Cytogenetics Core is equipped with high-resolution fluorescence and light photomicroscopes, and computerized imaging systems (including the SKY Applied Spectral Imaging System). The ASI Spectral Imaging System is powered by GenASIs™ which combines image acquisition with computer-assisted analysis (Figure 1). The system includes fluorescent, 24 color as well as conventional g-band karyotyping capabilities (Figure 2). Tissue culture facilities and equipment for metaphase chromosome preparation is also available.
