Willie Hicks serves as the Director of Recruitment for the College of Pharmacy (COP) and is responsible for all recruitment efforts. This includes implementing recruitment activities for assigned local and regional territories to attract a competitive applicant pool; monitoring and developing applicant inquiry reports to determine recruitment effectiveness; developing and managing relationships with high school advisors, college deans and dept. chairs, as well as other professional organizations promoting the COP program. Beyond assisting with on-campus events such as open houses, career days, campus tours and new student orientation, Mr. Hicks organizes and participates in recruitment events such as; college fairs, club meetings, and all other opportunities to present on behalf of the COP.
Outside of work Mr. Hicks enjoys spending time with his wife Meredith and their two children; Leah and Kameron. Willie and his family are big softball and basketball fans and spend a good deal of their time traveling for competition and enjoying various restaurants along the way.

My research interests are broadly in the area of medicinal chemistry and chemical biology. We study essential proteins involved in DNA repair processes. Using structural biology, fragment-based and computer-aided drug design techniques, we develop small molecule inhibitors and tool compounds of these proteins to provide a greater understanding of the mechanisms of DNA repair processes and of chemotherapeutic drug resistance.

My research interest is focused on learning the techniques and approaches that underscore hypothesis-driven basic and translational cardiovascular/lymphatic pharmacology research. The primary focus is the mechanisms of damage to the lymphatic system during cancer chemotherapy and developing therapeutic strategies to reduce this damage. The laboratory uses techniques such as tissue dissection, enzymatic cell isolation, flow cytometry, vascular functional studies, and gene and protein expression assays. The laboratory also employs both surgical techniques to measure lymph flow in vivo using high-speed optical imaging.
Another area of interest is the potential effects of cardiovascular drugs on lymphatic function. Hypertension has been associated with an increased risk of lymphedema in breast cancer patients. It is unclear whether this increased risk is due to the role of lymphatics in hypertension pathology or the medications used to treat hypertension. Thus we aim to study the effect of antihypertensive agents on lymphatic function and determine the contribution of antihypertensive agents to the development of lymphedema in cancer patients.
