What is a PEEP?
The Practice Expansion and Evaluation Project (PEEP) prepares pharmacy students for entry into the pharmacy profession by allowing them to work on a real-world project at a pharmacy site. Students are involved in designing, implementing, or evaluating a specific part of a practice advancement project, giving them hands-on experience in practice transformation and quality improvement.
The project is completed between the spring of the first year and the spring semester of the third year where students present their experience in the Principles of Pharmacy Practice IV course.
The project, jointly chosen by the student and the practice site, can be carried out in various settings such as a community or hospital-based pharmacy, or in another setting, such as managed care. The focus goes beyond the site’s usual tasks, aiming to improve or develop a meaningful part of the practice. While the project doesn’t have to lead to a large-scale change, it should contribute to the site in a way that has a meaningful impact.
Practice Transformation in the Curriculum
In 2025, the College implemented a new set of competencies to include a domain for practice transformation. PEEP addresses the PT2 competency of this domain.
4.1 Practice Transformation (Transformer) – Develop pharmacists who have the tools to be pioneers and advocates for the future of pharmacy practice.
PT1. The student will identify opportunities and challenges within the evolving healthcare system that serve as the impetus for advancement of services delivered by pharmacists.
PT2. The student will utilize evidence-based change processes centered around advancing pharmacy services.
Transform your “to-dos” into “done”
Pharmacists, this is a great way to move your ideas forward while supporting the next generation of pharmacists. We invite you to serve as a mentor and help transform your “to-do’s” into “done.
Serve as a mentorProject Requirements
Students are responsible for identifying the topic, site, and project mentor. Any pharmacist may serve as a project mentor in any practice setting (e.g community, institutional, managed care, pharmacy association, etc.). PEEPs must be approved by program directors prior to initiation. Students are expected to spend approximately 40 hours total on their PEEP, including meetings, research, developing materials, and interacting/training with staff.
